The October meeting of the Handlan Chapter of the Brooks Bird Club will be this Monday, Oct. 20th, at 6:30 p.m. at the South Charleston Public Library.  Jim and Barb Smith will present a program covering two topics:  Restoring the American Chestnut, and the Puffins of Machias Seal Island, New Brunswick.  Marilyn Morton and Ginger Triplett will provide refreshments following the program.  There will be an executive committee meeting at 6:00.
 
Nature writer Scott Shalaway's two talks last Sunday, both co-sponsored by our Handlan club, were engaging, informative, and well-received.  About 50 people attended each talk.
 
As a reminder, tomorrow (Saturday) is when friends of Handlan member Laura Miller are gathering at the trail club lodge at Kanawha State Forest (3:00ish) to help her celebrate the milestone of becoming an official U.S. citizen.  All are welcome.
