HANDLAN CHAPTER, BROOKS BIRD CLUB -- NEWSLETTER FOR DECEMBER 2000 NEXT MEETING - CHRISTMAS DINNER at the Char House, South Ridge Center, Monday, December 11th, 6:30PM. A minimum of twenty people are required to attend in order to avoid a charge for use of the dining room. This has never seemed to be an issue, but for other reasons as well everyone is encouraged to come out! The Executive Committee will not meet, but a brief Regular meeting will be held after dinner. There will not be a program, although the Shearers will entertain with a cleverly devised quiz. OUTINGS - Saturday, December 16th was selected for our Christmas count conduct- ed by the National Audubon Society. The coverage area is described by a fifteen mile radius circle with its center near the FMC flyash pond. Following is a list of locations that will be surveyed and group leaders: Coonskin Park - Hullet Good (346-6990) Dunbar - Pat Holbrook (744-2071) Berry Hills, Davis Creek, Cross Lanes - Arline Thorn, Cindy Ellis (586-4135) Tech Center, St. Albans - Bart Paxton, Marilyn & Don Morton (727-5077) Kanawha State Forest, Little Creek Park, Kanawha Country Club - Jim Triplett, John Smith, Russ Young (925-5668) Kanawha River - Ed Smith Anyone wanting to join a particular group should call the leader for de- tails. Anyone wanting to cover an additional area should contact Marilyn. Counting at feeders can be included as well. A fee of $5.00 is collected from all participants by Audubon in order to cover the expenses of pub- lishing results. Counters are graciously invited to gather at the Morton's after 5:OOPM for dinner and preliminary compiling of data -.their address is 2720 Lakeview Drive, St.Albans... Christmas counts being conducted by other groups'in the area are December.17th at Ona and December 30th at Huhtington. The outing of December 2nd recorded good numbers of a wide variety of waterfowl. Of particular interest were four surf scoters near Sandstone Falls, three horned grebes at Gauley Bridge, and a single Tundra Swan at Kanawha Falls. SUNRISE - It was recently reported that the new museum at the Clay Center re- ceived a substantial contribution in exchange for naming rights. This means that the Sunrise name and its associated endowments will remain with the historic mansion and grounds in South Hills. This is certainly a pos- itive development for the Greater Kanawha Valley Foundation and the Kanawha Valley Historical and Preservation Society, although it remains to be seen exactly what the future will hold. However, the possibility that our club may sometime soon have the option of again holding meetings and housing the library at Governor MacCorkle's old home seems a bit more promising. NEW MEMBERS? - The parent club recently distributed its membership directory and it is interesting to note that there are a dozen or more listings in the Charleston vicinity who are not also members of our chapter. Do they know we exist? If so, why don't they join in our fun?. Anyone, who would like to help in contacting these folks and inviting them to our January meeting, please call Russ at 925-5668. BALL CAPS - As requested by the Executive Committee, the Phelps have supplied the club with ten more embroidered hats to have available for sale at cost. They are khaki with blue lettering and the price is $10.00. If you don't already have one..................................... get one!
