Master Naturalist

Laura Miller gave a class on  Insects on August 22, 2008 (Friday).  This was followed by a field trip to Kanawha State Forest on August 23, 2008(Saturday) to catch and identify some insects.

Here are a few photos taken on Saturday.

After an introduction to the equipment, we went our separate ways to see what we could find.

The Salamander trail was popular.
Getting them with the net was the easy part.  Getting them out again and into the collection bottle was another thing.

This one just did not fit into the collection bottle.

Then we got back together to compare what we had found.
All the collection bottles were emptied and the contents examined.
The insects were examined and identified.
Laura kept us on track.

No, that is not its head falling off.

One pair of wings.  It has to be a fly.

We used a number of different methods for examining them.

Jim brought his portable microscope.

This is what it looked like through the microscope.
