Wildflowers (Fall Flora)
Margaret Denison Fall Nature Walks, September 11, 2010
– Walk led by Jerry Westfall -
| This walk started at the Kanawha State
Forest pool following the road up Shrewsberry Hollow and
returning on the Snipe Trail. The weather was a bit threatening with a slight
drizzle just when we started but it turned out to be a perfect day. It was cool
and comfortable, but an overcast sky made photograph a challenge. The group consisted of 2 guides and 10 participants, aged 2 to 72. Most had some knowledge of fall flora, except for little William who just enjoyed the walk in the woods. A couple of folks were Master Gardeners who were receiving extra credit for taking the walk. All were thankful that Jerry did not give the threatened quiz at the end. Thanks to Jerry’s expert guidance we identified 85 species or varieties of flora. Not all were in flower, but we saw some beautiful berries and seedpods such as purple Poke berries, bright orange Jack-in-the-Pulpit berries, bright red berries of the Spice Bush, and the fascinating seed pods of the Bursting Heart. A partial list of the flora identified is tabulated below. Due to time limitations, identification of ferns was limited to the easily noted Maidenhair Fern and the Christmas Fern. Most of the trees were ignored. With all this, we still got back in time to partake of the great BBQ sandwiches for lunch. |
